Local culture
- Mt. Aso’s caldera — the vast volcanic grassland of Kusasenri is a living landscape, grazed by the akaushi cattle that define the region
- Kurokawa yumeguri — the onsen-hopping pass gives you a wooden tegata to collect stamps from three baths, a ritual of the town’s riverside bathing culture
- Beppu’s Hells — the jigoku hot springs are too hot to bathe in, so locals turned them into a spectacle of steaming, coloured pools
- Yufuin’s Yunotsubo street — the old shopping street is where the town’s craft and café culture gathers at the foot of Mt. Yufu
- Takachiho kagura — the nightly yokagura at Takachiho Shrine performs the myth of the sun goddess hiding in the cave, a tradition kept alive since 1978
- Amano Iwato Shrine — the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu hid, the origin myth that the kagura dances retell
- Kumamoto Castle — one of the 12 original keeps, rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake with the original stonework preserved
- Suizenji Garden — a tea garden laid out to recreate the 53 stations of the Tōkaidō road in miniature, with a tiny Mt. Fuji
